Melasma is a mild skin condition that causes tan, dark patches on the skin. Experts think Melasma likely happens when melanocytes (the color-making cells in the skin) to go a little overboard to prepare the dark pigment known as melanin.
Melasma is a common skin problem causes discoloration especially in women 20-50 years of age and less common in men. But the good thing is it develops slowly. It is most commonly appears on the forehead, cheeks, bridge of the nose, chin, and above the upper lip. It can also appear on those parts of the body that exposes under the sun, like the forearms and neck. People with darker complexion are most susceptible to Melasma because they have more active color-making cells than those with lighter skin still anyone can build up this condition. Various people with Melasma have a history of daily or sporadic sun exposure, although the temperature is also suspected to be a key factor. It is most common in pregnant women.
The prevalence of melasma during pregnancy in Pakistan is 46%.
